My Entrepreneurship Story
My Entrepreneurship Story stays within the family. My dad, Scott Smiley, is a family law attorney in Tallahassee, Florida. After getting his law degree from Florida State University, he began working for a big law firm for a few years before partnering up with two former friends from law school to start their own law firm. My dad explained how starting your own firm takes confidence, strength, and leadership. Just like starting any other business, you need the confidence that you have what it takes, the strength to persevere the struggles, and the leadership to guide others to help grow the business or firm. He explained the importance of connections with former clients and how those connections help jump-start the business. Once the business starts to get going, the feeling that you created this whole new business is so satisfying and shows that hard work pays off. This story is what inspires me to start my own law firm someday. I am excited for ENT 3003 because of the entrepreneur mindset is instills in its students. I have never really understood Entrepreneurship and the mindset it requires.

Hi Brandon! It sounds like you had a really great entrepreneurial influence from your dad. Both my parents are also entrepreneurs, so my family also taught me a lot about what it takes to be one. I definitely agree that starting a new business requires you to have confidence, strength, and leadership; it is not easy to succeed without these qualities as I'm sure you have learned. In my major, event management, connections and experience are what all of my professors emphasize when starting a business. The contacts that you make can help you succeed and propel you in the right direction. It's great that you were able to grow up with your dad throughout his business success to see many different aspects of it. I'm sure you will make a great lawyer or business owner someday! Here is a link to my entrepreneurial story!

Hey Brandon, I really liked your entrepreneurship story. Your story hits close to home just like mine, my dad is also my entrepreneurial influence. He created his own business and became his own boss along side my mother. I found it really remarkable how your dad was able to start his own law firm with his former friends from school. I also liked the fact that your dad gave you feedback on how to start your own firm and I agree with what he told you about having confidence, strength and leadership. These skills are fundamental for anybody to have and more importantly for an entrepreneur. Connections are definitely a big part of getting any business started and just getting the company’s name out there. I am happy to hear that all the hard work that went into creating Thompson Crawford & Smiley law firm paid off and the satisfaction that you guys got from seeing your dads dreams come true.
